Be One in a Million Hearts

Happy Valentine’s Day!

On this day of all things love and hearts, how about showing some love for your own heart? I just found out about the new Million Hearts campaign and its goal to prevent one-million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. And since heart disease is very prevalent nowadays, I wanted to share the program with you.

Million Hearts is a national initiative that was recently launched by the Department of Health and Human Services. Its goal is for you to commit to reducing your risk of heart disease by signing the Million Hearts pledge in February — American Heart Month.

Here’s what you should know about women and heart disease:
  • Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women
  • Every minute, a woman dies of heart disease
  • More women die of heart disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer
  • If heart disease runs in your family You can take steps right now to help prevent that from happening:
o   Stop Smoking
o   Eat a healthy diet
o   Lower your cholesterol levels
o   Lower high blood pressure
o   Be physically active every day
o   Manage diabetes
o   Stay at a healthy weight
o   Reduce stress
o   Limit alcohol

By signing it, you pledge to:
  • PREVENT heart disease and stroke in your family by UNDERSTANDINGthe risks.
  • GET UP and GET ACTIVE by exercising for 30 minutes on most days of the week.
  •  KNOWyour ABCS: Appropriate Aspirin Therapy, Blood Pressure Control, Cholesterol Control, and Smoking Cessation.
  • STAY STRONG by eating a heart-healthy diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in sodium, saturated and trans fats, and cholesterol.
  • TAKE CONTROL of your heart health by following your doctor’s instructions for medications treatment.
I just signed the pledge. And here's where you can sign on to Be One in a Million Hearts too.

Have you signed it yet?
